Who leads our Student Council?
Mr. Torres is the advisor for Student Council, and is also the department head of Worcester Tech’s Painting and Design shop. Mr. Torres went to Fitchburg State University where he received a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree.
Mackenzie McNeil, current student council president, is a senior in Hospitality who is interested in going to Westfield State for college, where she wants to major in Psychology. Mackenzie says, “I’ve been in student council since my freshman year.” Mackenzie is also in the National Honor Society.
What is Student Council?
Student Council is a group of around thirty elected students who work with our school’s administration to discuss issues and concerns with our school community. Mackenzie McNeil, the council’s president, said that Tech’s Council is also part of an organization called ‘MASC’ which stands for the Massachusetts Association of Student Councils. Through MASC, student council members participate in many conferences throughout the year where they learn through workshops and peers how to be a better leader. It’s a great way to meet other students from across the state. “MASC is filled with inspiration and it’s an organization that Worcester Tech’s student council is so lucky to be a part of,” Mackenzie says.
What does Student Council do?
The Student Council plans meetings to discuss school issues and activities to benefit our student body. These leaders help students share their ideas, opinions, and concerns with teachers and administration. They often raise money for school-wide events. Mr.Torres, the council’s advisor, said, “The Student Council helps the school plan big fun events such as Homecoming, Spirit Week, the Fall Harvest Dance, Prom, and a talent show.” The council also helps support the school’s new freshmen. According to Mackenzie, “The Council members help organize Jump Start before the beginning of the school year. At Jump Start, students are broken into groups and assigned teachers that help students get their IDs and lockers for the first time.” During Jump Start, “the council members are the first upperclassmen our incoming freshmen meet and they make sure to become resources with any concern they may have,” says Mr. Torres.
Where can students go if they ever have any
questions or suggestions for Student Council?
Student Council is always open to hearing questions, concerns, and suggestions! Students can message Worcester Tech StuCo Instagram, which is @wths.student.council. Mackenzie says, “Our Public Relations Officer, junior Victoria Villamil, is great at answering any questions and responding to ideas.” Another way students can get involved is by sending a message to a student council member of choice through email or catching StuCo members in the hallways to chat.
In conclusion, Student Council is a big part of Worcester Tech and it is a place where students can come and share ideas that can improve our school and become better leaders. If you want to become a new member, see Mr. Torres in Painting and Design!
