Are you interested in Japanese culture? If so, the Anime Club at Worcester Tech might be the place to be! In The Anime Club, everyone comes together as a community to discuss similar interests about Japanese culture like anime or manga, and students are able to meet people who have similar interests and make new friends.
Anime includes drawings, shows, manga novels and movies, or even video games. There are a variety of genres that you may enjoy; for example, there’s action, adventure, romance, horror and many more. There are many topics discussed. Maybe you prefer to watch anime subtitled or dubbed? Unless you’re the ultimate weeb (a person who likes anime), who doesn’t need subtitles at all!
The Anime Club started five years ago. Senior Michaela Swisher is the president of the Anime Club along with advisor Mr. Louis Cote, an English teacher. The number one goal of the club is to get a large group of students to be able to do more activities like attending anime or manga events like CosPlay or Comicon.
In the club, students are able to watch various episodes of anime and discuss characters, plots, and storylines, and ways that could make the show better. Students also play online trivia games through Kahoots where the students can use their phones to play, challenge each other, and have fun.
President Michaela Swisher got involved in the club freshman year because she was curious to see what it was about and to hopefully make new friends. She ended up loving it and she says, “I still have friendships I made from the club even four years later.”
Swisher’s favorite activities in anime club consist of the different anime Kahoots we play and when the club members watch anime shows together. She said, “This year I hope to expand the club to include even more activities like origami and karaoke to name a few.” One of her hopes for this year is having a cosplay day because Worcester Tech currently does not host one. She said, “If there’s enough student interest I want to have a cosplay party open to anyone that includes prizes for the best cosplay.”
If you are interested in joining the club, they meet every Wednesday in Room C337 from 1:45 PM to 2:45 PM. There is no need to worry about transportation. Bus passes will be available for those without a ride. As Anime Club President Swisher says, the club is “a great chance to meet people with similar interests and form friendships.”
